Project development
Since 1990, DPA has advised more than a hundred arts, cultural, heritage and civic organisations on how best to imagine, develop and deliver great buildings for the arts. Over the last two decades, we have been the hidden catalyst, helping local authorities and other public bodies to harness the power of culture when places are in transition.
Unlike DPA, many of these are arts centres and galleries are firmly in the public eye.

QUAD, Derby: Peter Mount was appointed Director of Development by Derby CC to deliver the city’s new centre for film and the arts and from 2005 to 2011 he saw the building through from its earliest studies to its successful opening and the robust completion of the building and service contracts. DPA had conducted a series of paving and preparatory studies for the council, reviewing arts policy, artist infrastructure and options for the city’s Assembly Rooms, culminating in the hugely popular £12M QUAD.

Gardner Arts Centre/Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts, University of Sussex: working to the Vice Chancellor, DPA reviewed options for the sadly inactive and dilapidated Gardner, and provided the University with a route map for a fully integrated research driven centre for creative arts, opening in 2014.

BALTIC, Gateshead: DPA acted as Gateshead Council’s lead artistic and business planning advisor, with its multi-disciplinary team taking the project from a two page brief and an architect’s model in 1994 through the successful 35 million ACE Lottery award to the appointment of its Board and founding Director. David Powell authored Northern Arts Case for Capitalwhich set out the scale of the region’s ambition and paved the way for investment in BALTIC, The Sage and more than a £100m investment in capital in the region.

Brighton Dome: working with Chris Barron, Brighton Festival’s Director and with the council., DPA helped shape the successful lottery and funding bids which allowed the successful renovation and reopening of the Dome as one of the UK’s great venues. David Powell subsequently was a Director on Brighton Dome and Festival’s board for six years.

Stratford Circus: DPA was LB Newham’s lead team from the new Stratford Circus arts centre, a key part of the successful arts Lottery funding bid, put together by DPA, which enabled Theatre Royal Stratford East to be refurbished and the new education based Circus to be built next door. Stratford Circus houses a number of arts and educational projects and producers such as East London Dance and the University of East Londons Institute of Performing Artsand delivers one of London’s leading youth arts and education programmes.

In his personal capacity, David Powell was chair of the board of Camden Arts Centre throughout its successful and widely praised building redevelopment.
